The Corvette C6 is the sixth generation in Chevrolet’s two-seater sports car. The car was being sold between the years 2005 to 2013 and was replaced by the C7 Corvette.
The C6 has updated styling, new technology, upgraded suspension and larger engine than the previous C5 Corvette. Compared to its predecessor, the C6’s passenger compartment was quite larger, the car is five inches shorter overall and the wheelbase is longer, improving handling and ride quality. The C6 is the first generation Corvette to feature outdoor headlights since 1962.
Car development began in 2000, with the goal of “tightening” the body design to make it smaller and more space-efficient, keeping a clear visual connection to previous models. At the time, the Corvette engineering team stated that the goal was not to invent a completely new car, but to complete the details that were already there.
The C6 Corvette was first introduced as a coupe and convertible after 1968. All versions of the hardtop coupe C6 come with a removable panel on the roof for a targa-style feel.
The LS2 engine under the hood of the C6 was the newest and produced 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. It can be mated to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. In 2008, the engine was updated again, this time to the LS3. The displacement increased to 6.2 liters and the power increased to 430 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque. With the car’s light weight, performance is significantly improved compared to its predecessor, the 0-60 mph speed is just over four seconds.
The Corvette C6 is rated at just 15 mpg with the automatic transmission and 16 mpg with the manual transmission. To avoid the gas guzzler tax, Chevrolet has updated manual versions of the car with a computer-aided gear shifting system that allows the driver to shift directly from first to fourth gear at low speeds. This affected the fuel economy rating to avoid the tax cap.
At the time, the standard Corvette C6 was also very popular with critics and the public. Reviewers liked the car’s better handling, stronger engine and better interior. The ride quality is found to be impressively smooth and balanced. Critics have praised the previous Corvette C5 for improving it in almost every way, from performance to refinement to comfort. The Corvette C6 was considered a bargain, with one reviewer saying that any Chevrolet with less than $ 20,000 would be very difficult to surpass in its performance. The Porsche 911 was several thousand dollars more than the Corvette at the time and did not match its performance.
Today, the Corvette C6 is still considered a valuable pre-owned sports car. Prices for well-kept examples range between $ 30,000 and $ 40,000 and performance is higher than thousands of new cars. Early models were known to suffer from quality and mechanical problems, but later versions did not have those problems. Used car buyers will have an easy time finding many great examples of the C6 on eBay and elsewhere. Performance-modified versions like the Callaway Corvette are also very easy to find.
Corvette C6 Z06
Later in the first year of its production, the C6 became available in the high-performance Corvette Z06 model. It is equipped with the largest small-block engine ever produced: the 7.0-liter LS7 V8. The engine produced 505 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The engine is equipped with a dry-sump oil system and titanium alloy connecting rods.
The frame of the Z06 coupe is made from aluminum, which saves 136 pounds on the steel frame of the standard C6. Suspension components have also received upgrades as springs, shocks and anti-sway bars have been tightened. The C6 Corvette Z06 models differ from their standard counterparts in having a distinctive front fascia, distinct front fenders and spacious, distinctive wheels – but the resulting car does not have a spacious body.
The Z06 was so popular at the time of launch that dealers found it difficult to meet customer demand. In some cases, the cars were reported to have sold for thousands more than the MSRP.
Corvette C6 ZR1
The Corvette C6 ZR1 took the Z06 performance to another level. The Corvette ZR1 was rumored for many years before it was actually certified by anyone at Chevrolet or GM, eventually leaking under the code name “Project Blue Devil”.
As we see with the Corvette C8 today, spy photographers were caught spying on the C6 ZR1 and began leaking photos of parts before the car was actually announced. In 2007, General Motors began releasing project details publicly. In December of the same year, the car was officially announced with photos and descriptions.
The Corvette C6 ZR1 comes with a supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 V8 that produces 638 horsepower and 604 pound-feet of torque. The car’s autobahn test showed a top speed of 192 mph, while Chevrolet claims that the ZR1 can actually reach a top speed of 205 mph.
The C6 ZR1 is built with a lot of carbon fiber. The roof, hood, fenders, rocker molding and front splitter are all made of very strong and lightweight materials. The hood comes with a polycarbonate window that allows the intercooler to be viewed from the outside of the car. Carbon-ceramic brakes are paired with blue calipers as magnetic ride controls. Used system sensors to automatically adjust rigidity levels based on road conditions and vehicle performance.
Corvette C6 Grand Sport
In 2010, the Grand Sport Model was announced at the 12th annual Corvette Birthday Bash? at the National Corvette Museum. It is equipped with a new manual transmission with different gear ratios, larger anti-sway bars, stiffer springs, updated shocks, larger spoiler, transmission cooler, brake cooling intake ducts and many improvements over the exclusive Corvette C6 with a wheel included design.
The Corvette C6 is (and still is) a successful car at motorsports events around the world. The C6.R is a race-only model based on the Corvette C6, built by Pratt & Miller. Race organizers often ask that cars entering the competition meet homologation requirements. These regulations, in order to participate in the race, must produce a car for use on the road and must conform to specific production numbers. The C6.R has a unique advantage over its predecessor, in that it was developed alongside its road-going counterpart, the Corvette C6. This means it is designed to be more aggressive with fewer limitations, as many race-inspired engineers are added to the standard C6.
Both road and race cars have benefited from this arrangement. Race cars were able to be fitted with aluminum frames from road cars, which reduced the weight. Fixed headlight units on both cars reduced drag and further reduced weight. The Z06 has benefited as a high-performance model as it can be upgraded with components and designs directly from racing engineers.
C6.R was hailed as an innovative engineering project at the time. The car engine, not the road-going Corvette C6, is closely related to the Z06 to the LS7. It has won awards for its performance and stamina capabilities. The engines also have a cylinder deactivation feature, which is activated during caution just like road cars on the highway today to save fuel. Like many race cars, the C6.R has no rear windows – resulting in car bodywork and fuel tank placement. To help improve visibility, a camera was placed in the rear bumper and a monitor was placed inside the cockpit, giving the driver a rear view without relying solely on side view mirrors. The C6.R also features an air conditioning system that helps drivers cope with the extreme temperatures that can arise inside a race car.
The C6.R was unveiled in 2005 at the 12 Hours of Sebring? and finished second and third in its class in that race. It was unveiled later that year at the New York International Auto Show alongside the Corvette C6 Z06.
In 2006, the car won both the American Le Mans GT1 Championship and the GT1 class the following year in the 12-hour Sebring Race. By 2009, Cars had won several other championships before retiring. The GT2 version was developed and implemented and the C6.R is also available for sale to private racing teams.
